VMware VIEW HOSTS Server Specs

My organiztion is looking to deploy VMware VIEW to manage virtual desktops. We are looking to be able to handle 200 connections at any given time and have 400 VMs all managed using Linked Mode. We are using a Fiber connected SAN with 4TB of storage across multiple LUNs. We are going to redirect users profiles and My Documents to a seperate CIFS.

We are looking to get 4 Servers with the following Specs:

  • 2 Quad Core 2.60hz Chips(totaling 8 cores),

  • 64GB RAM,

  • 4 one GB network connections only used for the VMs(we will have other nics for managment, motion, etc).

Users will be using their Virtual desktops mainly for Office 2007 running on 32bit Windows xp. All other applications they use require minimal resources.

We assumed 8 active VMs per core, and 1gb of RAM per VM. So we assumed each server can handle 64 active VMs. About 3 servers to handle the 200 connected users and 1 Server to handle the 200 other VMs that are powered on but have no user connected to them.

Is this enough hardware to handle the load, is this Overkill, or is the logic above accurate? Thanks for the help.

The load on a server system can depend on a few different things:

1) What series are the processors? The Xeon 5500 series are extremely effective with virtualization and the release of the 5600 series is even more promising.

2) Are you planing to use a linked clone system? Using linked clones can reduce the over head that machines use, allowing you to get more out of a system.

We are looking to get the 5500 series and yes we are going to use linked clones.

Then yes, these specs should be in line with the logic that your using. You should be able to get the usage out of these systems in the mannor that you have suggested, just keep in mind that this may not leave much room for expansion.

We decided to go with one extra server to be safe and ready for growth.

Good call - we went the dual server route despite being sized for a single dual 55xx series server.

Makes sense in the long run - enjoy!

Cheers!
