VDI resources

We are also starting to test out possible implementations of VDI, and it's been interesting reading all the different interpretations of what the technology really means and how it should be implemented. As VDI is actually more of a methodology than an out of the box solution, obviously there are going to be a large variety of possible solutions as this idea grows. What I am interested in, is looking at all the known different resources that are starting to gather about this. Does anyone else have links to VDI resources, blogs, forums, etc?

I’ll start with some of the more obvious ones:

Seriously, no one out there has any resources/links to offer beyond these?

I guess I could offer a few more of my own if anyone is interested...

Anyone...? Bueller... Bueller?

VDI is still bleeding edge IMO, so you may not find as many resources as other aspects of virtualization.

Not much but here is another hyperlink:

For the records IBM VCS is just a superset of what VDI does (and of course it leverages VDI).

Thanks for the additions. I'm honestly not overly surprised that there have not been too many additional links to post, as it has been difficult to find more than what I originally provided since the term VDI started to pop up.

As Massimo pointed out, VDI is starting to go under different names as well. It all depends on who you are talking to. It also looks like HP is trying to list their solution as though they came up with the term VDI. (see my link above)

VMWare - VDI

Citrix - DDI (Dynamic Desktop Initiative)

IBM - VCS (Virtual Client Solution)

I'm waiting for VHS and BetaMax to start creeping up on us soon too. Smiley Happy

Feel free to add any additional links/references that come up to this post, to serve as a universal VDI bookmark reference list of sorts.

Thanks again

Steve

Steve,

for the records IBM VCS is a superset of VMware VDI in the sense that VDI is really (as of today) the raw virtualization technology while IBM VCS leverages VDI as the foundation technology but then we integrate it with the broker, the thin clients, the professional services, the management tools etc etc etc.

If we were to call it VDI as well I guess it would have been more confusing than it is right now (and yes today it is already confusing). As per Citrix .... pretty much the same thing even though they really focus on the brokering piece (and I guess they are not limited to VMware VDI as a "target" infrastructure.... that is they can point to physical machines as well ... not only virtual machines).

All in all it's just a marketing play ... everybody wants to pass the message that "I am the center of the universe and all my partners turns around me with their complementary technologies and non of these technologies are absolutely necessary except mine own".

Fair enough .... we need to live with marketing which is here to stay.

Massimo.

Oh, I agree completely on the marketing comments. The same is true with just about any new technolgoy or methodology that comes into our world. I know that I've run into similar looking into the Application Virtualization technologies as well lately, just another bandwagon that every vendor wants to try and get a part of. Thankfully though, with all of these companies looking at these technologies, it should mean there will be a lot of growth, interest, and oportunity (hopefully anyway). Thanks for the clarification on the IBM VCS as well!

Just some additional links. Yes, most of these are linked from each other, but still thought I'd provide them all. All of these are more from the Citrix side of things, but still some new(er) information regardless.

Here's another one for you... and yes it's for the Citrix Broker. There are some good general overviews of the whole Virtual Desktop methodology throughout this presentation though. It has already occured, but the video will be available for some time yet:

Citrix is buying Ardence, which will most likely end up in their future VDI/DDI offerings...

What i really hate is, that citrix bought ardence!!!

I am looking at the propero , networkprovion , appstream solution and dunes vdo sulotion.

It is not so easy to choose one because every solution has its on own unik

feature.

What I like at dunes you can combined it with Dunes' VS-O provides (i call it workflow progaming).

http://www.dunes.ch/

What i like at propero is the following:

"The Analyzer provides application usage information in a simple to understand format. It monitors who uses which applications, when and where, giving insight into user behavior and profiles and providing the basis for policy-based entitlements. Analyzer aggregates and enriches the information it collects to provide intuitive analyses of usage across the organization. These can be used to develop a roadmap for moving to on-demand, focus IT support efforts and assess licensing compliance and opportunities. "

I think now you much infos to read.

Maybe I get some points?

Thanks for the post meistermn! Unfortunately though, this thread was never posted with any points available. I just intended this to be a continual place for people to post any new information they may have found on VDI. Maybe a forum moderator will toss you a few points though.

Are thin client devices still relavant in a world of $300 Dell PCs?

Well I know we sometimes (as other oem's) sell low-end servers (SERVERS)for something like 400€. And if you are not that lucky you could buy them for 600/700 .....

So does it really make sense talking about ..... 4-way boxes + very expensive VMware licenses + a SANs + etc etc ? I think it does ............

BTW ... a thin client is about 5 watts..... a PC is about 120+watts ....... even if you count the slice of the server you need to use to support the thin client user ....... you are saving between 50 to 100 € per year depending on where you are and how long your pc is "on" per day (most customers have it on 24/24 just for not having trouble when they need to patch them distributed across the world ........ )

Time will tell......... who knows...

Massimo.
