Testing VDI

Okay, I too want to test VDI.

I want to start looking at the process but not sure whether putting XP desktops on my current ESX host ( ESX 3.5 / VC 2.5 / SAN) will be the same thing as really testing or getting a feel for VDI.

Another question is, if I attempt to install and demo VDI without a license (trial period, if available), do I put it on my ESX environment and will that cause a problem?

I have a stand-alone box that I could install ESXi and do the demo, is that a better option? Where does VD Manager go?

Thanks,

If you have XP machines running in your ESX enviornment, by all intents and purposes you are running VDI. XP machines in my opinion seem to be the choice for vPC's. On a one to one mapping VDI is straight forward.

If you want to test VDI with a connection broker, you should download VDM https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/login.php?eval=vdi or take a look at other brokers out there such as provision networks VAS solution http://www.provisionnetworks.com/solutions/vas/vas.aspx or LeoStream http://www.leostream.com/

Thanks,

In a nut-shell, where does the VMWare connection broker get installed and how would I expect to tie it into my new test installation of ESXi?

If I do go with the PC's on my ESX production environment, before using broker software, what if any benefit would that give my PC engineer to perform tests on how we will be able to use Virtual Desktop technology to replace physical machines. It would seem that he is only going to have those features that the VIC would give him.

We often work with customers in testing virtual desktops by showing which applications are accessed, the end user performance showing the connection times from a virtual desktop and a physical desktop as a baseline for a performance comparison, and detailed performance statistics inside the virtual desktop for memory, CPU, and application usage.

If you'd like a vmSight evaluation license to help you with your POC, please let me know. You can also view some sample reports @ .

In a nutshell the broker is installed on either a physical or virtual server running some form of Windows 2003. The broker is able to manage the VM's through integration with Virtual Center which is a requirement.
