Steps to Upgrade View 5.0 to 5.1 and vCenter 5.0 to 5.1.0.a

Hi,

I just inherited a View 5.0 on vCenter 5.0 infra.

I need to upgrade to the latests versions.

What are the good steps?

Upgrade View to 5.1x

upgrade vCenter to 5.1.0.a

upgrade the Esxi servers

Or am I better to create a new vCenter with 5.1.0a, link the view on it?

I found too much documentation with too much versions...

Thanks.

At the moment I would suggest that you dont upgrade unless you REALLY need the functinality that the later version gives. SSL on View 5.1 is greatly improved but on the Vshphere side its still a nightmare. If you do need to upgrade I would plan carefully or get help from someone who has done it before (such as a consultancy).

In answer to your question you can go directly to 5.1a from 5.0 and I would build a fresh enviroment and migrate rather than upgrade. SSL is easier on a new build than on upgrades. (make sure you have your Signed Certificates in place before you install)

My advice

build one esxi host (ESXi510-201210001 or later)

Install VCenter simple install. (check size of your enviroment first)

configure Vcenter

build remaing ESXi hosts

Install 1 connection server

Configure View

Build remaing Connection servers

Migrate gold images from old enviroment

build pools

I have personally moved a few customers to 5.1 and I still find its a challenge.
