Roaming profiles vs 3rd party profile management

Does anyone have experience with any 3rd party profile management solutions, or are most people using roaming profiles? Has anyone tried Appsense or Sepago?

There are a lot of profile management solutions on the market. You have to decide what you want. You can manage everything with standard Windows tools, but you need more time to set it up. You can manage your environment with login scripts and group policys, but a profile management solution is much more easy.

There are a lot of differences between the solution.

Sepago (aquired by Citrix) is more a user profile management solution only, which helps you to manage your user profiles for different servers or desktops. For example you are using a Citrix server with Published Applications ... a user logs on to the first server, because he needs to access MS Word. Now he opensthe next application, call it SAP, but this application is not installed on the same server. The client will open a connection to another server and will login the user with the same profile. The user changes some settings in Word, like the template path and closes Word. When he closes Word, he will be logges off and the user profile is written back to the fileserver. Now he works with the SAP and logs off there. The problem is, that the user has the same name on both sessions and also the same user profile. When he logs off in SAP, the user profile from that session/server will overwrite the first version written by the Word session. That means, that all configuration done in Word is lost. Sepago profiles helps you to merge these configurations of both sessions into one profile. The also have the possibility to compress and extract profiles on users logon / logoff.

Jumping Profiles will do the same.

AppSense is a solution to manage the whole user environment. The product is called AppSense Environment Manager. This solution helps you to manage the profile and also setup the environment. You can perform loads of actions during the user logon / logoff and startup / shutdown of the system. They work with Terminal servers, physical desktops and also with VDI. For example with this actions they can set registry settings, execute scripts, map network drives, printers .... and much more. You don't need to know scripting because you can manage everything with the GUI. This product can also help you to lockdown systems. they can hide buttons and other windows controls within applications, without changing code etc... great!

But there are more solutions on the market.... i don't really know them ...

I hope this helps,

Stepano and AppSense are good, they have nice graphical intefaces to help managment. however if you are happy with a little scripting then have a look at FlexProfiles from LoginConsultants. it is free and very flexible

wponder,

I have reviewed what you mention and evaluated RTOs solution but if you are telling people to go this route there is a much better option than this. Entrigue's Script Start ProfileUnity puts a check in all the same boxes as RTO and is far superior the the "basic" solution that Sepago/Citrix provies but it where it says logon improvement, Entrigue's Script Start ProfileUnity makes a HUGE difference in logon performance improvement. So for logon performance you have Citrix - Small Improvement, RTO - Good Improvement, Script Start ProfileUnity - Huge Improvement. We tested ProfileUnity and even the largest of profiles only took seconds to logon to. At the same time, Entrigue's solution actually provisions initial network admin profile settings for users, things that are normally a pain in the butt that admins have to do on a daily basis such as map drives/printers, create desktop shortcuts, setup MAPI profiles. BTW, we found Entigue because their profile provisioning solution is availabe as an easy to install Open Source solution....so admins can even run the profile provisioning solution at ZERO cost.

Steve,

This looks like an option that has not already been mendtioned in the thread. We are really intrested in understanding cusomter needs and requirements for profile management related to VDI. Would you be willing to have a discussion offline in person? I would like to understand how your using VDI today, what your findings were with each solution and how one vs. the other better met the specific needs of your environment?

Perhaps you also could shared with everyone here some specifics about your VDI environemt?
