Recording Audio Devices via RDP

Hello All,

I am having an issue where I cannot get recording audio devices to work via RDP.  I have tried USB and analog devices both through a Wyse thin client and via VmWare View. What I cannot get passed is that in the recroding devices (Control Pannel > Hadware and Sound > Sound) there is not any recording devices listed.  I have also tried this through an Xp SP3 VM and a Win 7 VM.

How do you enable recording devices or get them to install on the VM?

Setup:  Running both Win 7 and XP SP3 Vm's (I just need to get this working on one of them).

Connecting via a Wyse thin client, and have tried VmWare View 4.5

VmWare agent 4.5 is installed.

Have tried a Nuance Power Mic II and a Phillips Speech Mic pro (both USB) as well as an analog plantronics headset.

Any help is appreciated.

- Chris

We are trying this in two ways:  Right now, we are using VmWare view 4.5 to connect to our remote desktops.  We need the bidirectional sound to work because the physicians dictate using Dragon Speak into the medical record.

The other way we are testing it is with a thin client.

We connect a USB sound device, use the usb redirection, and it will install, however nothing will show up in the recording devices in the control panel (sound devices).

I have read where some people have gotten it to work, though those fixes seem to be for older versions of VmWare and nothing that is clear cut that works.

You'd probably need to buy the Wyse TCX extensions for RDP to make that work.

PCoIP can do it and I'm sure you'll find plenty of posts on this forum of people making this work.  I know we tested the Phillips Speech Mike a lot on PCoIP and Zero Clients and it works well.  I'd imagine a Windows Client would work well too.

We set up our VM's to PCoIP instead of RDP and it works.  However we cannot get the Phillips SpeechMike to pass through.  I think its because it isnt recognized as a USB device so VmWare cannot redirect it.  Either way, we got it to work with the Nuance mic's.

I am going to try and pick up a couple of the zero clients and test it as it may work well as you suggested.  Thanks for your help Gunnar.

THat makes some sense on the Windows Client.

This is under Troubleshooting on the above article:

"Be sure your USB device works when you plug it in and use it on the host system. If the USB device is not recognized on the host or does not work properly there, it might not work in a virtual machine, either."

Also, I just got off the phone with a customer having the same issue.

I know I've done work with the Phillips Speech Mic on Zero Clients, its not perfect but I've gotten it to work.
