Are there any recommendations for using hardware (e.g. F5) vs. software (e.g. GLB) load balancer with VMware View?
Does the hardware load balancer add to the overall reliability of the system? Does the hardware load balancer really move the connections back when the failed system comes online?
Pls advice.
Thanks,

I don't have any recomendations as to what is better but I can offer this pdf document from the VDM days.

Thanks for the reply Mittim.
However this paper does not make a case either way. Global Load Balancer can provide the same functionality - it can perform the port 443 health check and remove the View Connection server from the list if it does not respond. So what I am looking for is that - is there any particulate benefit in using hardware load balancer?
Thanks,

Have you looked into a virtual appliance, Zeus and Loadbalancer.org both make one. We tested both and went with the loadbalancer.org virtual appliance for pricing reasons.
Have you tested GLB? Any particular reason for not using GLB since it pretty much provides the same functionality?
In our particular environment we have set-up a Hercules Load Balancer
This has worked great for us, granted it's GPL and open-source but it does what we need it to do. It also has fail-over capabilities with a little manipulation of the pen files located on the appliance.
Any problems with a good old free with your 2003 standard edition OS... Microsoft Software-Based Network Load Balancing?
I just threw it on each of the two VDM VM's that I created. Extra Cost = $0. Microsoft Supported.
