Questions regarding VMware View.

Hi,

I'm new for VMware View, i have two questions regarding VMware View, can somebody help ? Thanks.

Question 1: Is vSphere license(ESXi & vCenter) required for VDI usage ? Does the View standard edition license include the vSphere license ?

Qeestion 2: Generally speaking, how many desktops can one Two-Socket server support ?  Or how many desktops can one CPU core support ?

How many desktops can one Two-Socket server support?

It all comes down to how one would define physical CPUs. - equivalent to sockets, so a multicore and/or hyperthreading CPU is counted as a single socket.

EXAMPLE:

1 socket with 6 cores is 6 vCPUs. If you have hyperthreading support on, it will present as twice that (12 vCPUs). But it's not actually useful as a 12 vCPU host. In short, having a core with two logical processors isn't the functional equivalent of 2 cores without multi-threading support. It's less, and sometimes much less.

Thanks Raul,

Regarding the last question, i'm still not clear. For example, if i have one server with 24 cores(48 threads with HT enabled), generally speaking, how many desktops it can support ?

Like I said before It all comes down to how one would define physical CPUs. "It depends" Depends on how many VM's, depends on the host specs, depends on the workload etc.. Never include hyper-threading in vCPU counts.  All you should concern yourself with is CORES and THREADS (technically).

The conservative estimate is

1 core has 8 threads. 

Therefore 1 core gives you 8 vCPU.

The math is straightforward.

Total Cores X Total Logical Processors = Performance vCPU count.

The number of cores is easy.  You have a physical processor and it has cores.  And you may have multiple processors.  So, the total number of cores is the number of processors x the number of cores. The number of logical processors you must get from the processor vendor.  These are the execution threads on each core.  As each core has a number of logical processors.  It could be 8, 12, 16, 32.  It depends on the chip-set.  So, the total logical processors is the number of cores X the number of logical processors per core.

I know it is too confusing And that is why the calculations are only estimations.
