Publishing View Client on a Citrix Server

Hey All,

Has anyone tried publishing the View Client to the Citrix Web Site on a Citrix Server?  The idea being that users go the web page, then launch the View Client via Citrix.

I tried searching the web and VMware.com, and haven't found much so far.  It seems like this would be a better method than distributing the client software to a large number of remote-access clients.

Thanks,

Drew

While I dont agree with your logic (Citrix requires a client too!)  I understand what you are trying to do and the answer is yes this is doable althoigh it may do some really weird things with your bandwidth.  The reverse would not be true (IE Citrix client inside of View).

Anyway, just ThinApp the View Client.  works like a charm.  in fact i only run on thinapp'd view clients when in windows.  drop the package on you XA farm.  publish it.  and bingo, view via citrix.

I don't think the client is supported on a server OS and I'm not even sure it will install.   The best thing if you want to do it that way is thinapp it as Gunnar has suggested.   USB redirection will not work when you thinapp but that's a moot point if your accessing through Citrix.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the replies, the ThinApp idea is good.  It might make more sense to do that and drop Citrix altogether.

I just want to make clear what I want to do:

  • We have existing Citrix servers
  • Users can go to the Citrix web servers and launch various apps (Word, IE, etc.) remotely from over the WAN
  • I need to plan for 2000 users accessing View remotely over the WAN

I was hoping to make use of the existing Citirx servers since the users are used to going there already, and instead of *installing* the View Client on their home PC's, they could launch it from the Citrix web page.  Then again, funneling 2000 users through Citrix may not be that great of an idea.

I guess an alternatvie would be to ThinApp the View Client and distribute it to users.

Thanks,
Andrew

I like the ThinApp way of distributing the View Client, however, View works much the same way as Citrix in your scenario.  If you go to your VCS server and instead of typing in /admin you'll get a standard login screen.  You could just have your users use this screen just like you XA WI landing page.  Its no where near as clean but its an option.

I would have some concern with running PCoIP through ICA.  Mainly becuase ICA might have bandwidth issues doing this.  I'm not sure how it would interrupt the stream of PCoIP data, would it think its Video, would it be able to do all of its cool bandwidth savings features.  I'm not sure as Citrix works very differently than View.  Citrix relies and understanding what hte OS is doing and sending information to the client to draw it.  View (PCoIP) just seems red pixel, blue pixel and forwards those pixels on (this is called host rendering).  I just wondering how ICA would work with that.  On the flip side, if you were to run Citrix through PCoIP you wouldn't have any of hte same concerns because PCoIP just sees red pixel, blue pixel, it doesn't care what creates those pixels.
