Persona management problems

I am trying to set up persona management and I believe I have everything configured correctly. Looking in the logs I see the following. Any ideas?

Not sure of your version, but Persona Management repositories on a Windows 2012 file server is not a supported configuration in versions prior to 6.0.2

The first place I would check is the file share permissions. There is a VMware Fling for persona management share validation:

Horizon View Persona Management Share Validation Tool – VMware Labs

A different thread on here had similar error messages, and the fix was to set Full Control on the persona share. You can read about it here:

View Persona not syncing some users

If you validate the share permissions are right, and you still have problems, please post a bit more info on your config.

Thanks for the reply.

Running the share validation tool gives me the following (I have removed the path)

*************************************************************************************
*                                  Results Summary                                  *
*************************************************************************************

Counts:
Empty DACL: 0
Null DACL: 0
Bad Permissions: 0
Access Denied Aces: 0

Path:

NTFS Results:
NTFS Permissions Meet Minimum Requirements

Share Results:
Domain Users has Full Control
Share Permissions Meet Minimum Requirements

*************************************************************************************
*                                   End of Report                                   *

The GPO settings are configured in the most basic way possible.

We are running Windows 7 ent and the file server is windows 2012. One thing to note is that the windows 7 optimization scripts were initially run and disabled the needed services. The following have been re-enabled and the persona service starts with no problems.

Microsoft software shadow copy process

VMware persona management

Volume shadow copy

Everything on the share validation and GPO look alright. How are you linking the GPO? Do you have a security group that you're adding PM users to?

Its applied to a specific test OU and it applies to authenticated users. It looks like its getting applied to the machine as I can see the settings in the registry.

You need Volume Shadow Copy on for Persona Management to Work.  Also, You will want to set the Loopback Policy to enabled.  Honestly, you don't want to run EVRYTHING in that script all the time, especially on newer versions of View where the Windows Firewall has to be on for Blast to work.  I left a link for the Persona Guide as well a link to the Flings OS Optimization Tool.  It has a GUI interface instead of the script.  I think It really helps you better see what is happening, you can customize and create your own config, and roll back.  The site is messed up right now.  But the link should work eventually.  Wouldn't be the first time a VMware page was down.

Hi,

It is nice if you attach persona log file so I can see the whole story.

Thanks,

Henky

I have already reconfigured the volume shadow copy service so this is running along with the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider.

I restarted the persona service and I have attached the log (Ihave removed things like the machine FQN, user names etc. but all these are as
I would expect them to be in the log)

The lines that stand out to me are -

Failed Retrieving Version:
C:\Windows\System32\VMWVvpginastub.dll, 0x8007007A (This file does not appear
to be on my system)

FindFirstFile Failed: Path:
C:\ProgramData\VMware\HGFS\*.dat, 0x80070002 (This folder is empty)

I am not sure if these are relevant to my issue or not.

We're also having weird Persona problems.

Opened tickets with VMware, but they have not been able to resolve it yet. But we also couldn't provide them with all logs they asked for. They started asking for more and more logs, and it got to a point where we could not gather the requested logs without impacting end users. And this is strictly not an option in our environment.

Hope you have more luck with VMware support than we had. I understand that logs are important, but c'mon...

Also, we had (still have) similar entries in our logs like you have.

Seems that the desktop is not configured properly as domain member. Did you join this desktop to the domain?

The log shows that there is no machine name returned from the domain.

Hi any_guy,

I'm sorry you have bad experience with our support.

Could you please let me know support ticket number so I can follow up.

Also, it is nice you attach your log here so I can quick scan it.

Thanks,

Henky

Thanks for the reply h3nKY - as per my post I removed details such as the machine FQN, domain name, user name etc from the logs as my company is not happy posting identifying information like that on a public forum..

Oh, I see.

Scanned the logs but I'm unable to find "VPLogonNotify_OnLogon" keyword. This message will be print out when Persona got notified from Windows that a user is logging in.

Could you please attach the logs after user logged in (such filename with .bak suffix)?

Log attached following a user logon event. I have removed identifying data as before but all paths/names look correct.

Your persona log file looks weird.

Did you edit other than just machine name?

I can't see the whole story from the beginning user login and logoff.

It's hard to analyze without complete log.

Just updating this to let people know this is still not working. I have a support case logged but so far no luck.

I have tried creating a vanilla Win7 machine with only tools and the view agent installed and its having the same issue. I assume that this would mean its something to do with the central repository or maybe an interfering policy setting. Both of these appear fine though.

Thanks larsonm. That's the exact problem. Just tried with a 2008 server I have handy and it works with no problems.

We are currently running view 6.0.1 and this does not work with a repository on a 2012 server. No indication in the article why but the fix/workaround is to either update view or to use a repository on a 2008 server.
