PcOIP Performance issues

Hi All,

I have been trying to complet a proof of concept inwhich we could potentially replace our desktops with thin clients. I have spent the last several months attempting to get a Citrix enviroment up and running with out much sucess (ran into the same issues as i will describe below)...   So i turned to vmware View in hopes that PcOIP will be the answer. We got our hands on a Hp t5545 and the performance for PcOIP is not what i was expecting.

Too be honest...  after seeing the youtube video's of users showing off there Vmware View enviroment I was expecting near PC like perforumance.

What we are currently faced with is the following.

1) choppy flash video playback.

2) When going to google.com, typing in cnn, then clicking on images and doing a scroll down....  The page becomes very choppy.

3) Moving windows around the screen (1900x1080) is choppy.

4) Playing the demo video in windows 7 provides us with frozen video and choppy audio.

The thin client is connected too the same 100mb cisco switch as the Vmware server.  There is currently ONE thin client running at the moment (the HP one). Turning off all other Vm's and leaving the end users desktop Vm up and running does not inprove performance.  The vm was configured with 1 cpu, 2 cores and 3gb of ram.

I see people running games on there smart screens and yet I can not even do a simple flash video or scroll google.com images....

I can help you.  This is something we see a lot of.  If you want a quick fix add a second virtual cpu to your image and try connecting again.  If you're testing out vmware view I would highly recommend you ditch the thin client and get a zero client.  It will render more pixels per second and it is easier to manage and maintain that a thin client is.

When you add the second virtual cpu to your VM image and check out flash based videos you will see a significant performance increase.  That's one quick fix.  If this looks like something you like and would consider to roll out I would suggest a PCOIP offload card (APEX 2800 http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=02G-IP-SC01-KR)

It will do the PCOIP offload capabilities for you.  You wouldn't need to add a second vcpu to fix the choppy flash video.  There are a number of things you can do to make the performance better.  I would consider turning build to lossless off and checking out teradici's site for other options to enhance pcoip performance http://techsupport.teradici.com

This is one area we excel at so don't hesitate to respond to this post for more help.

Hey,

All of my VM's are dual core VM's.  I will be trying a dell fx100 within the week.    If i want to game..  I assume I will need a host card..  right?

All the VMs have dual cpus and you're having issues playing flash media?  Wow, that's not typical.  You won't be playing very graphic intense games using View until View 5.5 comes out and you use a vgx graphics card from Nvidia.  http://blogs.nvidia.com/2012/08/nvidia-and-vmware-enhance-the-virtual-desktop-experience/

The PCoIP offload card will offload the cpu requirements for encapsulating the pcoip traffic from your cpu on your server.  I would check this webcast out that is happening in a little over a week on the offload card.

Rebuilt the windows 7 VM with dual CPU's and 2gb of ram.  No improvement.

The hard drive for the VM resides on an SSD.   The HP client looks to be using VMware view client 4.6. The view broker and view agent are version 5.1 though...
