How is everyone creating their linked clone parents? Do you create a base image with customizations / optimizations that hold true for all your View pools and then create a template out of it? Therefore one can create the parent VMs from it and further customize them till you are ready to snapshot and deploy? If you do this do we need to sysprep or run a customized spec when creating the parents from the base template or just clone it?
that what we do from you, a template and reclone out as a golden template, of course with the right naming convention so that we do not confuse each other. we skip the sysprep thing as later during the view linked clone process, quickprep/sysprep will be changing the SID.
If I'm not mistaken and it's been awhile for me I created a Master Image. I then cloned that image for use on my linked pools and converted the original Master into a template to use for my non linked clone pools. This way I knew my base was consistent from the start for all of my pools.

The pool provisioning proces through View includes a "Windows Customization" process, and user can choose which type of customization that is suitable. Using the selected customization and pool parameters View will customize each linked clones . Hence during parent VM creation you may be only interested in optimize it (but not customizing). There optimization guides available for each OS types.
The core idea behind Parent VM creation and snapshot is:
Please note that each linked clones share a common disk file for the the system drive data, that is available at the stage of taking snapshot.
Hope this clarifies.

Where are you storing the parent images? What SAN Tier?
My parent is stored on standard SATA since I only turn it on to update it. We store our replicas on SSD
