I am trying to set up offline desktop. I installed view client with offline desktop. I connect to the desktop, but still as I have been doing in the past and I don't see any options to run offline. Is there something I'm missing here? Do I need to run workstation or something on my client (XP laptop)?
are you allowing offline desktop usage in View Manager policies?
Are you licensed to use offline desktop? I think this is only a Premier capability?
What version of vCenter, ESX, and View are you using?
View manager policies? If you mean view Administrator (connection server) I'm not sure where to set that entitlement.
I believe we are licensed for offline desktop, we are running Premier 3.0.1.
I'm running ESX 4.0 VCserver 4.0 (vSphere).

ditto on the above based on version.
I am currently running View, I'm also currently running vSphere. It works the same as it did when I was on VI 3.5.
I have an XP VM on ESX 4.0 which has the View agent software. I have the connection server on a Real non-vm W2K3 server, I have the VC server on a Real W2K3 server. My ESX hosts are also real.
So, my View is running fine, it doesn't have to run on vSphere, the client is on my XP laptop connecting to a XP VM on ESX. What I need to figure is how to use the offline feature. Do I need to run workstation on my laptop where the View client resides?
Sure View on vSphere technically will work (mostly).
However, as lbourque mentioned, View Composer and Offline Desktops will not function and are not supported when you run View on vSphere.
Expect this capability sometime in 2nd half of '09.
Thanks for your help.
It just seems strange that the only thing that has changed in my setup with regards to View is that my ESX host on which my XP VM with View agent is now running ESX 4.0. So what you are saying suggests that offline desktops worked with VM's that were running under ESX 3.5 and not 4.0.
Exactly ESX4 and vCenter 4 with View 3.x using offline desktop and/or composer is not supported yet.
Ok thanks, that is dissapointing though that I just upgraded my VI3 to vSphere and VMware has left that feature out of their upgrade. Oh well.
If you had read the Release notes or browsed this forum before upgrading you would have seen the vSphere does not support View, SRM, Lab Manager, Life Cycle Manager, Stage Manager etc. all these products are currenly undergoing a upgrade process to support vSphere.
the option of View that are not supported are Linked Clones and Offline Desktops. further Offline Desktops are still in "Experimental Status" and as such do not have full support.
