Office 2007 is halting VDI (Memory consumption issue?) - Suggestions for troubleshooting issue?

It seems that when our end-users do a lot of copying+pasting when using PowerPoint 07, Excel 07, or Word 07, it stores directly in the Office Clipboard (it stores up to 24 items), and this causes their VDI Workstation to freeze up. Essentially, their taskbar becomes inactive, but they can still (slowly) navigate through Windows Explorer. My current resolution is just to end the OFFLB.exe or Office application process (taskkill /PID ### /F) so they can continue with their work.

However, this is just one scenario of memory consumption that happens. This also occurs when using this free graphics viewer called irfanview to resize an image, or crop it, etc. Also happens when navigating through open windows in Windows Explorer.

I guess I would like recommendations on how to tackle this issue.

I thought it might have been a memory balloon issue as referenced in these two articles:

I guess it wasn't. So, I guess I'm rather clueless on how to tackle this issue since it could be a lot of things. Any tools or tips would be great

Our production environment is not using VMWare View. However, we are using Virtual Center 2.5 and VDI.

We have about 40+ Windows XP VMs right now, with essentially the same template (VMware Virtual Platform):

CPU = Intel(R) Xeon(R) E5345 @ 2.33 Ghz

Memory = 512 MB of RAM

Total Physical Memory = 512.00 MB; Available Physical Memory = 117.37 MB; Total Virtual Memory = 2.00 GB; Available Virtual Memory = 1.96 GB; Page File Space = 1.22 GB; Page File = C:\pagefile.sys

HDD = 10 GB (VMware Virtual Disk SCSI Disk Device)

SCSI and RAID controllers = LSI Adapter, Ultra320 SCSI 2000 series, w/1020/1030

Display Adapter = VMware SVGA II

IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers = Intel (r) 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE IDE Controller, and Primary IDE Channel

NIC = VMware Accelerated AMD PCNet Adapter

What is your page file size? How much memory is each process taking?

Hey Defiant365,

The info is this:

Total Physical Memory = 512.00 MB

Available Physical Memory = 117.37 MB

Total Virtual Memory = 2.00 GB

Available Virtual Memory = 1.96 GB

Page File Space = 1.22 GB

Page File = C:\pagefile.sys

I'm assuming that on average, the Office products (i.e. PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Word) are about 40-60,000 KB in memory usage, and the CPU utilization is about 5-10%. Other processes, such as Rtvscan.exe (Symantec) take about 78,000 KB or so. However, Windows Explorer navigates file.

Right now, PowerPoint 07 is going wicked sluggish. It's already a known issue that the presentation visuals (chart objects) will be slow, but eh...

Any suggested troubleshooting steps though?
