Network Push VMWare View Client to diskless workstations

Greetings folks,

We are in the

research/testing phase of VDI(VIEW) right now. We have a ESX server

set aside with virtual desktops all setup and ready to go. We have it

pointing to our VC, composer is enabled, we've tested

provisioning/recomposing/refreshing, etc. Currently our view

clients are only installed on top of existing XP workstations.

Eventually we

would like to push out the view client app onto diskless workstations.

We do not want to purchase any new equipment for this, like thin

clients. Due to budget constraints, we would like to re-use all our

existing workstations. What we really want is to be able to have some

sort of network boot server to be able to push the view client app down

to all the diskless workstations.

So, with that all

said and done, can you all please share the best method possible to

achieve this on a Windows server environment, no Linux if possible(but

if it is the best method, please let us know). We realize open source would most likely save us more money in the end.

Please specify the applications by name where

applicable. If this has been discussed prior, please link. General, high

level instructions would be adequate.

Thanks in advance.

Hi.

There a number of different ways of accomplish this, here are some initial suggestions:

VDI Blaster from DevonIT: http://www.devonit.com/software/vdi-blaster/overview

ThinStation, opensource: http://www.thinstation.org/

Another solution would be to keep Windows on your clients and stream the View Client using some application virtualization like ThinApp.

Best regards,

Linjo
