Migrating to View 4

Hi all,

Next month, I'm going to be setting up a View 4

environment on three brand new ESX servers coupled with a virtual

Componser/vCenter. My current ESX servers running 3.1 will be torn down

and given to the software guys (poor servers!). In my planning, most

guides seemed tailored to upgrading 3.1 in place to 4. Are there any

guides that cover having two totally seperate groups of servers and

simply migrating each pool's base image from View 3 servers to View 4

servers until the View 3.1 servers are empty?

Right now, I plan to

provision the same storage to my View 4 cluster and my View 3 cluster.

Every night, I'll delete a pool on the View 3 cluster and create it on

the View 4 cluster. According to the upgrade guide, the 3.1 Client

doesn't like the new Composer, so as long as I remove the old client and

install the new one, I should be good to go, right?

Am I missing

some amazingly obvious obstacle to a migration, or is it just too simple

to bother writing a guide for and I'm way over thinking this? :smileyshocked:

Side note: thanks for all the help over the years.

Your approach will depend if you have shared storage or not, you will first need to get your new ESX servers in the same Virtual Center or vsphere environment and then you can migrate your VM`s if you don't have shared storage then you will have to do this offline.

In the worst case you may have to do an export and re import, once you have moved them you will need to update VMware tools.
