Linux VMware View PCoIP client found! (finally)

Hi all -

I (finally) stumbled across a VMware View (PCoIP enabled) linux client. You can download it here:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12...

It's from HP's site and is part of their T5545 update. I downloaded the executable and extracted it to a temp folder and then SSH'd over the vmware-view-client_4.0.0-215529_i386.deb to my custom Debian build and installed it. Then I PXE booted the new image and see that it in fact has the PCoIP and multi-head components (bonus!). Smiley Happy

Hope this helps everyone. Not sure why this wasn't available in the first place as competitors are more than happy to hand out their connection clients.

Warmest regards,

--Adam

My pleasure. Smiley Happy Saw one of your posts looked at UbuntuUSBView. This will work nicely for that.

I've been testing it with a PXE-bootable Debian set up and it's working really well.

This is not available in the first place because View Client support for Linux is currently only available and supported through thin client partners such as HP and others running on their tested and certified clients.

Thanks Warren. Understood. So what we are doing would be unsupported. Not an issue as we are still in the experimental/engineering phases. Is there any intention of releasing a supported Linux client? I only ask this as the linux install seemed even MORE trivial than that of the Windows install if you could believe it or not. Smiley Happy

All I did was run: "dpkg -i --force-all vmware-view-client_4.0.0-215529_i386.deb"

...and literally 10 seconds later ran "vmware-view" and was ready to go. I noticed that my gtk version in Ubuntu was problematic (no keyboard and mouse) so I downgraded from the version 2.18 to 2.4 and it worked just as well as my Debian build.

After unpacking these packages. Where did you get vmware-view-client_4.0.0-215529_i386.deb?

Hi there,

Yes, there's tons of files in the executable and what you're showing are the entire contents. You'll only need vmware-view-client_4.0.0-215529_i386.deb. In Ubuntu, the gtk version is causing keyboard/mouse focus issues so install a rev older (2.4-2.16 worked perfect for my Debian install so I took the Debian dpkg and installed it on Ubuntu).

Yes, it would be unsupported by VMware. I also do not know what HPs position is on reusing their packages on non-HP clients. That deb package is technically a HP package. We do not distribute install packages to our partners. They package up the client for their platforms as each is very different.

This is also why you are having the input issue. There are known issues with certain window managers and GTK requirements. There are easier ways to fix them than down reving. Not something we would reccomend as that could affect other apps in the distro. Those fixes are typically done on the client though and included as part of its integration.

Hi again,

I used this:

http://packages.debian.org/lenny/libgtk2.0-0

BUT!!! As a warning. Do this at your own risk. Backup/Snapshot your Linux distro before doing this as you might run into problems (as Warren mentioned above). AGAIN!!! If this crashes your PC, causes massive problems with your apps, and eats your cat, then please don't kill me. Smiley Wink

Warmest regards,

Thanks again Warren for the info.

Using FVWM and ICEWM right now as the window manager and I also am using differing revs of GTK from 2.0.4 to 2.0.16 (looks like rev 17 is where I experience the loss of kb/mouse control within a session).

I also just spun up 2 Debian VM's (etch and lenny) and it looks like the default builds work with this release although I need to dig into a bit.

Just for some clarity, when will VMware release a linux client (even if it's "experimental")? The reason I ask is because this version that HP put together is a DEB package that looks quite complete and is easy to deploy.

I'll be meeting with Tom tomorrow but I am not too sure if he has this on the roadmap.

Yea, you should hit issues with .17 forward. Depending on what patches that client has. Window manager wise you likely are not going to hit to many issues except with multimon possibly.

I cannot speak to futures on unannounced products. Tom is dialed in and should know the latest. I can only think of one small thing that is not well known yet he might not have the full scoop on Smiley Wink

Even newer version of the client found here:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12...

vmware-view-client_4.0.1-235010_i386.deb <-- looks like the 4.0.1 client with thinprint support Smiley Happy

Hi there,

Looks like the link is working again (might have been down before).

I just navigated to:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12...

And it took me to a download page with a 12MB file.

As a semi-novice would it be possible to obtain the steps you went through to load this into Ubuntu? Is it an apt-get process or what?

Thanks!
