I am a contractor for an organization that uses VMWare Horizon remote desktop. My PC setup has 6 Dell 4K monitors that are connected to a single Dell Workstation PC with 32GB of RAM. The 6 monitors are the same Dell 4K models with a 60Hz refresh rate. I have very fast internet connection, at 300GB/300GB or higher. When I work on my desktop (without VMWare Horizon), my PC is blazing fast, with no lag whatsoever. As soon I enter the VMWare environment, my PC slows down dramatically. The lag/latency is so severe that a MS Excel macro that takes 1 second to run on the desktop takes more than 10 seconds. When I launch the Snipping Tool to snip a screenshot, it takes 15 seconds for the snip to begin working.
I brought up this issue to my client organization. Their reply was that the latency was most likely due to my 6-monitor setup. They think that VMWare does not support more than 4 monitors. However, even when I disconnect all but 2 monitors, the latency is much better but still there. There should be very little latency in VMWare Horizon with 2 monitors. The fact that I am still experiencing a noticeable lag with only 2 monitors tells me that something other than 6 monitors is the reason.
My setting is Microsoft RDP. When I try the other settings (VMWare Blast, PCoIP), the latency is even worse.
Would a higher-end video card help reduce the latency? My current video card is AMD Radeon 7700 Series.
Is there anything you can suggest? Am I stuck with this latency for good, or is there a solution to this problem?
Thanks for your help.
John
6 monitors would definity cause some lag.
Are you using the latest Horizon client?
How much CPU/Ram is assigned to your VM?
try to switch and go to a single monitor full screen and see if it makes a difference. If it does talk to your client and see what the max amount of monitors & resolutions is that they support. Horizon itself only goes op to 4 monitors anyway https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Horizon-Client-for-Windows/2306/horizon-client-windows-installatio....
This is correct, Horizon only supports up to 4 monitors running in 4k assuming the virtual desktop backing the session is running VM hardware version 13 or 14. It also might be prudent to check:
Keep in mind that the display protocol only sends updates for what changes on the screen, so if you're attempting to refresh content on all 4 monitors at the same time, there is a tremendous amount of data being transmitted sometimes requiring up to 1000mbps connections.
Latency in VMware Horizon Remote Desktop refers to the delay or lag in response time between user actions and the corresponding actions on the remote desktop. It can be affected by various factors such as network performance, hardware capabilities, and configuration settings.
