Instant Clones and Software Center

Hi all,

We are set in the old ways of using Linked Clones and Full clones. To be honest, we use Linked Clones only to speed up deployments, as we don't have a solution for saving user environments and one off software deployments. So we never recompose. As such, we require every VDI to have Software Center on it so that we can patch and manage the machines. We also have a software library that we are using inside SCCM to make apps available.

I am reading and testing out Instant Clones as we move to 7.13. What I don't understand is how SCCM will play with this. Obviously, patching will be 100x easier because we will just need to patch the parent VM. No need to individually patch the 700 + VDIs we have hosted.

How about Software Center itself? The app catalog, the other stats we get from these machines such as disk space, what's installed, etc. The client cannot go on the master image since each clone would then have the same SID. This caused havoc in our SCCM before. Does anyone else use SC and Instant Clones?

Skip software center and take a look at appvolume and DEM (was named UEM before)

that’s the trick with instant clones. And if you have softwares that all of the users in the pool will use then install it in the golden image. And softwares that only some uses. Have appvolume so you can push it out to just that users and not all.

dem saves the user settings in what ever you want for that user.
