Improve remote performance?

I'm evaluating VMware View. I have an evaluation version of vCenter (v2.5,build 119598), running a single datacenter, with two hosts running ESXi (v3.5, 123629). Both of the hosts are on the same subnet. All storage is local to each host. My (standard) View Connection Server and vCenter machines, as well as any Parent VMs I'm using, are joined to an Active Directory domain. I have a Security Server set up to authenticate remote users through AD. I work for a software company and I'm provisioning non-persistent linked clones so that sales people can demonstrate our web-based products.

Performance of my vClones through remote sessions of View Client suck.

I'm satisfied with performance of the vClones over the LAN, but from a remote location, even mouse clicks and cursor focus are taking a long time - in the range of 5-10 seconds. For example, if I open IE7 to our product page, make a change to a browser setting, and then move the cursor over to the web page, it can easily take 10 seconds for the cursor to change focus. Screen refreshes or rendering of new pages are equally painful.

I have a feeling I might be missing something in optimizing performance, but can't find anything to help me with that. Do you have any suggestions?

Did you update to RDP 6.1 in both the template machine and the client you are connecting from? It can help with. Might check the "force offscreen composition" option in IE with-in the template as well. In Citrix environments it makes a difference.

That seemed to help a lot, Craig. Thanks.

Any idea on how to set the "force offscreen compositing" with a GPO? Unless I'm missing it, I don't see it in anywhere. Basically, I'm looking at setting it for all users - the Registry setting only makes it for the Current User.

Haven't tried and don't know for sure, but I think you can import the IE settings into a User Configuration GPO. When you import it, it should import the off-screen composition setting. You can also push out registry keys, so you could probably push out the HKCU setting.
