Identify Persona Syncing Problems - Log entires

Hi all,

we're still encountering random syncing problems with view persona management (files not syncing from persona share, sometimes no files at all, sometimes only some files, sometimes desktop missing all files etc.)

Could anyone explain the following log entries and what would cause them. I do not know yet, if it is related to the syncing problems, but can't rule it out yet either.

These are log entries from a user that logged in but didn't get his files to sync from the persona share. Other settings like Outlook config were fine. It's just really the files that do not sync down sometimes.

Hi,

I replied to your original post about this and you never came back to it?

I asked about permissions in that post, still looks relevant according to your logs (possibly).

Hi Ryan,

sorry I completely forgot about that post.

To answer your questions you had in the other post:

If you access the share from the machine once logged on, are there any issues?

No issues. Can access the users profile folder on the share just fine.

Is there proper DNS configured for abcd-cifs-xx.nas.xxx ?  (Forward/Reverse?)

Yes.

Have you tried removing the profile of the user from the share and trying to login again with a brand new one?

Yes. Sometimes it fixes it for a certain time, sometimes it doesn't. It happens randomly to random users.

Have you checked permissions on the share? Tried enabling more permissions?

Permissions are set as per VMware best practices, which refer to Windows Roaming Profile permissions. There is one group though, the local "Administrator" group, which is added automatically

on the NTFS permissions level. It is a NetApp CIFS share and right now I have no idea why that group gets added automatically.

VMware had a look at our share and except for that one group, they said it is configured just fine.

The share level permissions is set to "Domain Users".

Hi,

No worries! Looks like an interesting one, that's for sure! I'm not sure on the errors exactly, but it certainly doesn't look healthy.

Is there any chance that you can setup a  Windows Server share to test on and temporarily re-direct some profiles there to test? At this stage I'm thinking of eliminating potential causes (NetApp CIFS share). Just thinking of things to try really to narrow the root cause down!

I might end up doing just that.

Question;

In this post you mentioned "This enabled me to prove that the problem was permission related (in fact it was SHARE permissions, not NTFS)"

What was configured wrong before you fixed it? For the share permissions it is recommended to add the security groups that need access to it.

What we did, is we just added "Domain Users", and not the actually persona management security groups. It should work in theory, so I don't think that is what's causing it. Just wanted mention it and am curious what share level permissions you initially configured that caused it to fail.

Thanks,

Hi,

I actually had to troubleshoot that issue for a colleague of mine who had set the shares up and I noticed odd behavior with profiles on our VDI. Essentially I did a similar thing, testing a separate share, targeting specific  test users via GPO. In the end it turned out to be the DFS share permissions. I believe the correct practice is to set the share permissions open, but then lock down the NTFS permissions on the folders themselves.

At your stage, I'd definitley look at the route of testing another Windows share to start eliminating what the problem is, it's not too much work!

I've setup a Windows 2012 share over the weekend and followed best practices. I also did not turn on DFS or dedup.

But still, similar syncing issues. I enabled the very minimum GPO settings. Basically just that it is persona enabled and the share location.

The syncing TO the persona share is fine. It's just that when users log in, sometimes their files are not displayed (desktop, my documents etc.). Printers, drive mappings etc. are fine.

At this point I have no clue anymore why these syncing issues happen Smiley Sad.

The test profile I used was no more than 300MB in size. The Windows Event Viewer shows a persona entry saying it loaded successfully after 27.3 seconds.

Alright, I have spent hours reviewing logs and events and compared between when it loaded profiles correctly and when it didn't load correctly.

The only difference I've found is in the "VMWVvp_Status.txt" file which is located in: C:\ProgramData\VMware\VDM\logs

The logs in said file, are all the same, except for the very last lines of it (**User Data Start**). When it loads successfully, the log is much shorter compared to when it fails. Below are the logs, first the successful on and second the one when it fails. I've highlighted failed messages red. Though I still have no clue about the why and what causes the profile to load.

When loading profile correctly:

Hmm, those logs don't really offer much help do they! I can't say I've ever seen this before, it seems very strange. Does it happen to all users at random, or specific ones?

Have you run the Persona Management tool Fling that validates all permissions on your shares? I'm sure they are correct but worth checking. Have you got the latest ADMX files for your persona GPO? Have you tried disabling that on your users OU and trying another one with minimum settings?

I'm really spit balling at this stage but thought I'd try to offer some extra troubleshooting suggestions!

I have run the fling against the share and got following results (see below). Before, I'd like to show you how it's setup:

persona$\poolA\username.AD.V2

persona$: root share  (this is where i run the fling against)

     Share Permissions:     Domain Users: FC

     NTFS Permissions:     Everyone: FC

\poolA:     the different pool folders which contain the actual user profile folders

NTFS Permissions:       Creator Owner: FC: Subfolders and files only | not inherited

System: FC: This folder, subfolders and files |not inherited

Entitlement group containing provisioned user accounts:     List folder / read data, Create folders, append data : This folder only  | not inherited

\username.AD.V2: the actual user profile folders

NTFS Permissions:     System: FC: This folder, subfolders and files | not inherited

User account: FC: This folder, subfolders and files | not inherited

Administrators: FC: This folder, subfolders and files   |  This group gets added by NetApp automatically and I do no know why.

for post 7 in this thread :

do you have the logs reversed?

you say that when the logs say:

************************************** User Data Start **************************************

*************************************** User Data End ***************************************

that it works.

for me, this is the error for when the profile fails to load.

i have a view 6.1 setup that works.

i have a 7.5 horizon setup that has been nothing less than painful.

i have the 7.5 with the hopes of moving to it from the 6.1.

same image on both. just newer agent/tools/hardware/gpo, all the things to get it running on 7.5

same user, same gpo settings, 7.5 will not even log any user data.
