How to Setup View Manager?

Hi,

I am a completely newbie to VMWare View. For our project, I am trying to deliver a VM (with a specific application pre-installed) as a streamed desktop.

I went through the View documentation, and based on my understanding I have take the following steps:

1) I installed View agent into the VM which is running on M1. M1 is an ESXi server.

2) I installed View client on M3 which is my target client machine.

3) On M2, which is my admin machine M2; I have vSphere installed through which I manage M1.

If my understanding is correct, then I am suppose to intall View Manager on M2.

But with the package I received from VMWare's website to install View Manager, there is no such thing called "Manager". There are two additional executables, namely: View Composer and View Connection Server. Are these both together are called "View Manager" and necessary to install on my admin machine M2?

And finally, how View Manager works with vCenter?

Thanks,

Omer

Follow this document:

http://www.vmware.com/pdf/view401_admin_guide.pdf

View Manager = View Connection Server.

Install View Manager in a Windows 32 bit (must be domain member).

Install Composer into vCenter Server with Windows 32 bit (must be domain member).

Install View Agent in your VM Desktop "templates".

Deploy the VM using pool or independent VM.

Use View Client to connect to View Manager.

Thanks Andre.

So when I installs the View Composer in the same machine as where View Manager to be installed, then it asks for Data Source Name (DSN) but it doesn't provide any mechanism to automatically create it?? How to do this?

Right.

You have to do it manually.

Also create a new DB, instead of using the same of vCenter.

If you have SQL or SQL Express you can use Management Studio to create the DB.

Then use the ODBC 32 bit to create the DSN.

Hi Andre,

OK. So I created a blank MS Access database on my system and provided an ODBC connection to it.

Now to set up DSN, view composer asks for the table names, user/password. What data base structure I would need???

This is a bit strange that the installer doesn't provide a mechanism to automatically generate this.

You cannot use Access.

See official documentation for supported DB:

http://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/view_pubs.html

For Composer you can also use SQL Express, and also the same instance of vCenter Server, but you have to ceate a empty DB (use SQL Management) and the DSN descrition for the connection.

Hi,

I am manage to install View Connection Server and View Composer (with DSN) using this article:

http://www.mikes.eu/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=235:install-vmware-view-composer&ca...

Now the next step is how to add vCenter in the view server. Apparently, it can't connect.

On my vCenter, I have vSphere client running but how can I check if vCenter server is running??

If you can connect with the vSphere client, than vCenter is working.

It is in the domain, as also the View Manager?

Have you add the vCenter (in View Manager) with the domain credential?
