Horizon Setup

Is it ok to have the connection server and vcenter hosted on the same physical server or will there be performance issues on this type of setup

On the connection server we want to create an instant clone desktop pool of 30 vm's

Hardware Spec for the physical server is 10 core dual processor with 256GB RAM & 5TB storage

Are you referring to the vCenter Server for Windows? If so that's not possible due to port conflicts. You should deploy a VCSA.

Hi Ben

I meant if we only have one physical server, we want to install esxi and two win2012 vm's, one as connection server and the other one as the vcenter

You can't do instant clones wit only one esxi server, you need a minimum of two. IF your keeping this for any length of time you really should install the vcenter appliance and not use windows, and just install the composer service on a separate vm.

Yes, for testing purposes that would be possible. I used to have a laptop running ESXi with all components (AD+Horizon) to show basics of VDI before cloud based alternatives made it easier.

What cloud based alternative are you using?

If you want to configure things and break stuff you could use HOL:

VMware Learning Platform

But if you need to test something from the end user perspective you would need to use something like this one:

VMware TestDrive

That would work for a PoC but I highly recommend you use the VCSA instead of the vCenter Server for Windows. VMware has EoL the vCenter Server for Windows and 6.7 was the last release of it.
