Horizon Agent Install Fails - Rollback

We have a Server 2012 R2 gold image we use with an RDSH instant clone farm. I have recently tried upgrading the agent to 7.13.1 (from 7.13), and after about 3/4 of the way, the install simply stops and rolls back. I've seen behavior like this mentioned in other posts/Google searches, but, so far different solutions I've tried have not worked.

I'm installing it logged in as local admin, which I always do, but I've also tried with my AD credentials signed in that have local admin rights. I've tried disjoining it from our domain in case some GPO is conflicting. I've tried uninstalling tools (11.2.5) and the agent, then re-installing tools and running the agent clean, still fails. I've tried different agent versions even, going back to 7.10.2.

I have seen mention that people had seen this when the system has needed a reboot for something else, perhaps Windows updates. I've verified the system is up to date and restarted several times prior to no avail. I'm stumped at this point.

After "copying new files" the status bar hangs for a bit like this:

epa80_0-1629335366068.png

Then a minute or so later, I get:

epa80_1-1629335419850.png

Then finally:

epa80_2-1629335574421.png

For giggles, I tried rebooting after this message, and running it again. Hoping perhaps it needed a reboot to finish something before it could proceed, and just didn't tell, but, no go on that.

I did notice that after running and failing, in Add/Remove programs, I have 2 new entries for Microsoft Visual C++ that weren't there prior to the run:

Just in case, I tried running Windows updates again, but didn't find anything new.

I do have an SR open as well, but, figured I'd try the forums also. Below are the install logs from my latest attempt. Technically there's 2 log files, this one the much smaller one. I could post the content of the larger one if it would be valuable.

Much appreciated if anyone takes a look. I'm just stumped.

Hi

it looks like the package is corrupt or has some problem
try to download it again and check the md5

also do a further test if you can ... from a win2012r2 install it clean and see if it goes.
As a last resort (but take a backup of the Golden image) uninstall the 7.13 agent, reboot and install the 7.13.1 agent

Are the windows update services actually enabled while your doing the agent install ?

Got an update from support:

I have reviewed the logs provided and apparently the issue is caused by the inability to uninstall the VMware Virtual Printer Driver:

vdmInstUtil: 08/18/21 10:13:01 Uninstalled driver (VMware Universal EMF Driver) at most 5 times

vdmInstUtil: 08/18/21 10:13:01 WARNING: failed to uninstall driver (VMware Universal EMF Driver) with error code 1797

vdmInstUtil: 08/18/21 10:13:03 WARNING: failed to uninstall driver (VMware Universal EMF Driver) with error code 1797

vdmInstUtil: 08/18/21 10:13:05 WARNING: failed to uninstall driver (VMware Universal EMF Driver) with error code 1797

vdmInstUtil: 08/18/21 10:13:07 WARNING: failed to uninstall driver (VMware Universal EMF Driver) with error code 1797

vdmInstUtil: 08/18/21 10:13:09 WARNING: failed to uninstall driver (VMware Universal EMF Driver) with error code 1797

INSTUTIL: Service status: SERVICE_RUNNING cp=0x00000000

Investigating this matter internally, this same message error ("failed to uninstall driver (VMware Universal EMF Driver) with error code 1797") is observed if there are some environmental issues where the ntprint.inf which have some print driver files provided by Microsoft is sitting on x86 folder instead of amd64 folder (path C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\), so the uninstall fail, as it is looking for the driver in the wrong path/location. Would you be able to confirm where the ntprint.inf is on the OS?

If you try to uninstall the agent 7.13 and install the agent 7.13.1 without any printer on it, does the installation goes through?

I am not sure what they mean by see where ntprint.inf is located. I did a search and I find it all over the place, both as a singular file as well as part of a folder name itself. I asked for clarification.

However, when I uninstalled 7.13.0, and installed 7.13.1 without Virtual Printing or Integrated Printing, the install did finish. To further test, upon reboot, I ran the setup exe again and chose modify, adding in the Integrated Printing, and the rollback issue happened.

Seems the issue has been identified, so, just have to figure out how to work around that to get printing back in there.

Hi there! Any update on this? I'm having exact the same issue.

Try to update / or even new-install to the latest Horizon 8 Agent. Same behaviour, installation OK (without Universal Printer).
After check for Universal Printer package, installation rolls back.

Hate to say it but we never did find the root cause/full solution. We ended up reverting to a previous snapshot on the server gold where the issue was no longer happening. Of course we had the understanding this meant the issue could always return, although it hasn't yet.

The last feedback from support was this:

As per internal information we have in regards to this issue, the "failed to uninstall driver (VMware Universal EMF Driver) with error code 1797" is observed if there are some environmental issues where the ntprint.inf which have some print driver files provided by Microsoft is sitting on x86 folder instead of amd64 folder (path C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\), so the uninstall fail, as it is looking for the driver files in the wrong path/location. To resolve it, you would probably need to manually fix the issues with the ntprint.inf drivers first (Microsoft might be able to help you on that).

Wish I had a more solid reply to give.

and as I was afraid of, we're back to getting it now that we HAVE to go to a newer agent. Trying to upgrade from 7.10.1 to 7.13.1 and I get the same rollback issue. At least now I'm getting a popup error. Maybe someone has seen this. Few Googles I've done mention disabling UAC, but it didn't work for me.

Hi there,

this is so curious 😕 My problem was, that after a recent Windows Server 2019 Update, i couldn't never install/update local Printers (and therefore my Agent Upgrade failed, as i have Universal Printing enabled).

So after a lot of troubleshooting, searching logs, and so on i did the following:

  • mounted a new Windows 2019
  • did an installation over my existing Master/Golden-Image
  • all Applications and Data were still there (but from then on - no further Windows Updates)
  • then it was possible to install/update Printers
  • and also Upgrade the Horizon Agent to the lastest Version
  • after that, installed the Windows Updates (it must be one of these updates/hotfixes...
    ,MarkusHartmann_0-1651671470718.png
  • ...and the error/problem came back

But for the customer and also for me, it's now OK, because everything is working/up2date - with the exception that it's not possible anymore to update Printer-things...

So it must be a WIndows Update issue.
Hope this helps. Best regards Markus

Unfortunately the only patch that seemed to be in our environment and a possibility, was the bottom one, KB435680. It was installed a while ago, so I removed it, rebooted, attempted to modify Horizon and add in Integrated Printing, it failed.

For the other 3 patches:

  • KB4589208 = was installed but got installed today, after I already was experiencing the issue. Removed it anyway, rebooted, attempted the modify and it failed.
  • KB5012647 = not installed/present.
  • KB5012796 = not installed/predent.

Unfortunately I'm likely looking at just a clean rebuild at this point.

One interesting point. If I modify the agent and add back in Virtual Printing, it seems like the error does happen, yet the services for ThinPrint are there and present. I might just go with TP for now.
