Dragon Naturally Speaking with View 4.5 Win7 desktop?

Has anyone tried this? even in XP or Vista? I've had a request to try this and my experimenting time is limited

We are currently working on this as well.  VMs are Win7 and Dragon is the Medical version.  I'm working on ThinApp'ing Dragon and am running into a few issues.  I'm going to install it locally on the parent VM now to see if some of the issues are resolved.  Have you had any luck?  Are you using USB microphones and what protocol are you using to connect to the VMs?

Sorry Jim,

I haven't begun to test this yet.  I won't be thinapp'ing it it would be a dedicated VM with a USB Mic.

I have been working on this as well using DNS 10.1 Medical. I have been using PCOIP with Wyse-P20 zero client I can get the program to install, but I cannot pass voice over the mic using a Philips SpeechMikePro.

Has anyone had any luck with this yet?  I am able to dictate, but I can not get the hotkeys on the speech mic to work.

Thanks

It is a Philips SpeechMike Pro USB.  I have some with barcode and some without.  I am not so concerned with the barcode scanner working just trying to get the hotkeys to function.

Thanks

I've successfully thinapp'd Dragon.  From what I understand, the Phillips Speechmike has issues with redirecting to the VMs in View.  Our company is now using the PowerMic II provided by Nuance.  That seems to work just fine with no modifications needed.

I've tried streaming the thinapp in View however the performance isn't acceptable.  When the user tries to dictate, there is a lot of lag over both RDP and PCoIP.  I think since it's streaming, the bits required for the ongoing dictation with the vocabulary files need to be streamed into RAM on the fly, however Dragon is looking for them immediately during the dictation.  Installing Dragon locally on the VM works just fine and the dictation works as expected.  Are you streaming the app?

Also, our VMs are Windows 7.  The USB driver for the MIC installs automatically once connected (policy via GPO) on the VM.  When Dragon is first launched, it can't see the audio device.  This is because Windows 7 needs a reboot after the driver install, even though the OS doesn't prompt to be restarted.  Nuance support says that a reboot is necessary.  If I disconnect the mic via the view client, then reconnect it, Dragon sees it and it works.  This leads me to believe that a restart isn't needed, Windows just needs the usb hub / device to be "refreshed" or restarted in device manager.  I've found a way around the reboot issue via a thinapp startup script - since rebooting a VM in a floating pool won't work.  Upon launching the thinapp, the script restarts a few usb devices using the devcon utility from Microsoft,  then dragon is launched.  Since the devices have been restarted, Dragon sees the mic immediately upon launch.  I'd be happy to provide the script if anyone else is running into this issue.

Thanks,

Josh

I bought a couple of the Nuance Power Mic II's and they work great thanks for the advice.

I have Nuance Power Mic II and only get standard microphone funactionality, how do you achieve Advance Functionality?

We are having the same problem, with Dragon saying there is no audio device available. But we are not running dragon through thin app.  Is there a script we can use to restart the usb hub / device?

How is everyone getting past the problem where on the view session, you will train your user the first time.  But then when we recompose, and then you open that user, it says it hasnt had the audio setup yet.  We have roaming users setup to save the profile to a network location, but it doesent seem to save the setting that you have already setup the audio.  So then after we recompose, each user has to go through the initial voice setup again.

The Nuance Mangement Server will look to match up the user logged in and the PC to ensure they've successfully been through the audio setup process before for that workstation/VM.  Nuance claims this is the best way to ensure quality control and prevent problems in mic funtionality/quality.  You can turn this off, but only for the entire dictating environment and it's not recommended.

What drives this match up of user ID and PC, I'm not 100% sure.  I do know if you look at documents and settings, USER LOGGED IN, app data, nuance, naturally speaking 10 there's a file nsuser.ini that mentions the last five people to dictate at the PC under that windows profile name, but like I say this only keeps the last 5.  In the user's roaming profile on the network the list of PCs a person has dictated at is kept in USERNAME\USERNAME\current\audio.ini.  If you're having trouble with people and PC locations being 'remembered' by Dragon check first here that the list of PCs is growing and appending as people dictate at multiple workstations

If you want a user to be able to dictate at more than 9 PCs without their profile forgetting which ones they've been at before, you'll have to look at the nssystem.ini file under documents and settings, all users, app data, nuance, natuarally speaking 10.  In the .ini you need to add a line under the [Settings] header that reads exactly:

Number of Audio Settings=300

In our environment we're only starting to look at getting dictation going through pooled VDI desktops so I can offer any more advice that this.  Hopefully if anyone out there has gotten this working they can offer some details.

Yeah that script would be great to have even though we're ready enough to deploy it yet, thanks.

I'm not sure where this post sits, but Dragon Naturally should work over VMware View.  I doubt 4.5 would be very successful but 4.6 should work and 5.0 of course.  You should be able to get input controls (mouse/"keyboard") and audio (input for dictation and output for playback).  I can't speak for the View Client for Windows or Linux, but I can speak for the Zero Clients as I've worked with customers that do this (and we used to test the Phillips Speach Mics when I worked at Teradici).

BTW, I wouldn't ThinApp it as that would just add more layers between the USB device and the application.  I'd start with keeping it simple, make sure it works then add the TA layer if it is required for your environment.

We have been using Dragon in our View 4.6 environment for the past year.  We have made some customizations to how the application is started and we use a script to manipulate device manager on our Windows 7 clones so Dragon will pick up the mic the first time it's launched.  Dragon is installed locally on the VMs, however I've been working on Thinapping it.  I've successfully streamed it to a test pool which doesn't have Dragon installed locally.  It appears to be working well.  I'm still wondering how to prevent the Audio setup wizard from running each time a user logs into a floating desktop.  At this point, Dragon users are using a dedicated pool so the ATW isn't an issue.  We want to go floating though....

Having an almost identical issue...  It is a slightly different scenario but hopefully someone here can offer suggestions.

Host:  Vista

Guest:  XP

VMView:  4.5

DNS:  v.11.5 Premium

Equipment:  Microsoft Lifechat LX-3000 USB headset w/mic

I can get the software to install to the VDI but the mic won't read.  I have change settings and properties to no avail.  The mic works fine on the host system withouth the software installed.

I installed it on a completely different configuration and was able to get it to work.

Host:  XP

Guest:  XP

VMView:  5.1

DNS:  v.11.5 Premium

Equipment:  Microsoft Lifechat LX-3000 USB headset w/mic

Other than updating to VMView 5.1 are there any other suggestions to try and get this to work?

Has anyone else had issues the the microphone portion of the PowerMic II? The speaker and mouse use the vmware virtual audio driver but the Mic field is greyed out.  I am using View 5.0.1 and tried it on a Win XP and Win 7 desktop.  The Microphone is not being redirected.

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

I had some similar issues and found that it was due to issues with the version of View Agent I had installed.  Even though you are on View 5.01, install the latest version of the View Agent on to your desktop pool and you will have much better results.  The USB drivers are upgraded and it solves many issues with USB microphones.

Hi,

I am hoping to get the script as our machines will recognize the powermic but only after a refresh and some machines wont autoinstall powermic drivers.

Also don't know if you are interested but our facility is looking for a dragon specialist its in a beautiful place in Colorado. hope to hear from you soon. Really needing to fix some of these issues. I am a just doctor that is trying to help out the facility by the way.
