Differences with View 5.1

I have noticed some differences with View 5.1:

  1. When I go to the broker server web address is doesn't automatically launch view if its installed and if its not installed it has you go to an external website instead of walking the user through the installation. Why did they do this?
  2. Also https redirection seems to only work in frefox and not IE.

These are just 2 that I would like advice on fixing if anyone has ideas?

Since upgrading to View 5.1 this has been the cause of most of the support calls regarding our external connections to View.

Does anyone know if there is a way to restore the functionality in View 5.1?

For number 1 you can change the behavior of where it attempts to download the View client.   Check out page 110 on the installation pdf, http://pubs.vmware.com/view-51/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/view-51-installation.pdf

The goal of the change was to detach the View Client updates from the general product updates, so that they could provide more rapid updates to the client without needing to upgrade the entire version. For the long run this is good, but I can see how it can cause issues if users were expecting otherwise.

Hi,

Thanks for the responses - however I have already changed the links to download the clients and can absolutely see the benefits, it was always annoying how we could not remove the local mode client and would field helpdesk calls asking which client to download.

My issue with View 5.1 isn't this change, but the fact that Internet Explorer used to launch the View Client for the users when it was installed.  Many of our users didn't even realise they had installed software which could be run independantly of the View webpage and have been calling our helpdesk as they visit the View webpage and it asks them to install the software every time.

The HTTPS redirection is a minor annoyance, but browsing to the View webpage as a HTTP site used to redirect to HTTPS.  Now it just gives a The page you requested (http://viewaddress)  is not available.  Try HTTPS instead.
