Best way to deploy windows udpates in linked clone desktops

Hi,

We are using vmware view dedicated linked clone desktops in our environment. I have installed latest windows updates in Master image.

What is the best way to deploy the new image to existing pools?

Hello, it depends of your environment

In most cases you should just start recompose for the pool

  1. Cleanup the windows update files (they can take significant amount of space over time)
  2. Removed any installers you might have placed in the master image
  3. Run ngen.exe on the master image (compile .NET framework)
  4. Ensure you have released the IP and flushed the DNS
  5. Shutdown master image
  6. Take a snapshot
  7. Edit the desktop pool to point to this new snapshot
  8. Recompose the pool

Are you using local or roaming profiles?

How are you storing user profiles in the desktop?

There are some really good blogs out there that provide details on master image creation and maintenance. I can find and send some links when I have some time.
