Got Fedora Workstation 36 to work on 22H2 Apple Silicon TP

The Tech Preview testing guide says that Fedora 36 installers won't work. I was able to find a work-around that will allow the installation and use of Fedora 36 on the Tech Preview:

  • Download the latest Fedora Workstation 36 live installer - the one I used was Fedora-Workstation-Live-aarch64-36-1.5.iso
  • Boot the installer, but choose "Troubleshooting" in the grub meno. Then select the option to boot the installer in basic graphics mode.
  • The graphical environment will boot. Select the option to install to hard disk.
  • Install Fedora as you normally would.
  • After installation, reboot your VM, and let Fedora complete setup.
  • The graphical environment will be booted, but you will be unable to change screen resolutions as the installation has propagated the use of the native frame buffer and not the VMware vmwgfx graphics driver.
  • Now wait for Fedora to prompt you for software updates. Install the updates. This will install a new version of the kernel (5.18.13-200.fc36.aarch64).
  • After the update, install grub-customizer (dnf install grub-customizer).
  • Execute grub-customizer, and remove the "nomodeset" argument from the kernel boot arguments. Save your changes.

Reboot, and you will have the ability to resize the graphical screen. Not only will the resizing work from within the VM, but you can resize the window and the resolution in the VM will change as well.

ah very cool!

Hopefully 36 gets kernel 5.19 (and soonish) which should address all of this.

Great. I've also found that latest spins of openSUSE Tumbleweed now contain a 5.19 kernel.

Awaiting when Ubuntu will follow suit...
