How's your experience with the Tech Preview going?

The team put a lot of work into this release, and I'd love to let them know how the community feels about it!

When using Fusion 13, it's probably a good idea to power off the VM from inside the VM and not use the Fusion GUI. I've run Windows 11 ARM 22H2 VMs on Fusion 13 for almost a year now and never had a problem reported on power-up if I shut the VM down from within the guest.

My Windows 11 ARM VMs in the 2023 Tech Preview have not crashed after power down regardless of whether I use the Fusion GUI or power-off from with the VM.

(and of course, I probably just jinxed myself)...

"When using Fusion 13, it's probably a good idea to power off the VM from inside the VM and not use the Fusion GUI ...."

I always did it that way ...

What may cause the problems too is I always ran my VM on a USB C NVME external drive !?

It's a lil bit embarrassing to be the only one having so much trouble :grinning_face_with_sweat:

But .. The good thing is it's getting better understanding this stuff.

I am not familiar with setting up VM´s and for god sake not too proud to ask.

For me this is the right place to be because I believe VMware tech preview is really good by a lot of reasons ..

first off the performance ... Absolutely stunning and of course 3D Support.

Needless to say I tried Parallels and Crossover before.. None of them were convincing relating my minor use cases like casual gaming

and running some special Windows programs.

I am from Germany and I hope my English isn't that bad :grinning_face_with_sweat:

A screenshot of my Mac OS Sonoma Energy settings is attached.

I know it's German but I think it follows the same order

My first setup running VMWare was a Macbook air with 8GB of Ram

Now I have a Mac mini 2020 M1 with 16GB :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Any suggestions ?

Best regards

Fisch

@Mikero any chance of a refreshed TP that fixes the Sonoma installer issue?  I know we'll have a lot of posts about that here in a couple of weeks :-).

May I ask ?

Do you like to install VMWare Tech Preview on Sonoma or Sonoma as a VM Machine ?

I am using VMWare Fusion Tech Preview on Sonoma (latest beta). Haven't had any issue installing it.

Sonoma as VM machine ... did you try

<snip

?

Fisch

Just FYI - the article you linked to discusses installing macOS on VMware Workstation running on non-Apple hardware. That discussion is off limits in this forum. Apple does not license macOS to be installed on non-Apple hardware, and VMware could be in serious legal trouble if Apple thinks it’s encouraging it. Also, the article discusses hacking VMware Workstation - that’s a violation of VMwares licensing agreements, and also off limits.

I think you’ll find people have been able to run Ventura as a VM - on Intel Macs only. They would have to build an ISO from the .dmg downloaded from Apple similar to what was done in the article.

macOS virtual machine support for Fusion is on life support. As of this point in time, VMware doesn’t officially list any macOS version for use on Fusion 13 on Intel Macs. They deprecated macOS support across both Fusion and ESXi and have a KB article that says there will be no support for future macOS versions. Older macOS versions will continue to work.  if newer macOS versions don’t work, the issues won’t be fixed

And as of today, Fusion can’t virtualize any version of macOS on Apple Silicon Macs.

Which issue is this specifically referring to? (my brain houses the knowledge of thousands of bugs... "sonoma installer issue" could be like a few different things from my perspective)

Ha, fair enough.  The one where people report having to drag the installer to the desktop to get it to run.  I'm not on Sonoma yet myself, so I can't test and verify.

This may have been posted elsewhere but I can't find it for the life of me. First, Fusion Tech Preview is magnificent on my M2 MacBook Air, performance and accelerated graphics work great! I can't find any regressions from the non-preview version, all wins for me.

Not necessarily specific to the tech preview but it would be nice to increase the amount of shared graphics memory available to a VM as some games (particularly Elite Dangerous for me) won't get past texture generation with a maximum of 8GB. It's possible to raise the shared graphics memory with an edit to the .vmx file, but the graphics driver within Windows continues to report a maximum of 8192GB shared memory. Sad face.

In particular on M1/M2 machines where memory overcommit is a fairly reasonable thing to do, a 16GB option with driver support would be amaaaaazing.

I was scoping out components for a PC build (my i7 6400K is below the bar of Starfield's requirements), and looking at new GPUs I had the same thought... we should bump it to 16GB as the max soonish.

I don't know how much meaningful performance difference it would make with like-for-like benchmarks, but it does indeed seem like the reasonable next step.

Yeah not sure it would necessarily improve performance (it might) but it would provide enough texture memory for some of these new games

We'll see what happens as we move forward with DX12

By “see” what do you mean?

If you have your VM configured for “Share with my Mac” (NAT) networking you won’t be able to see it in Windows Explorer by name. You may be able to connect to it if you use its IP address (\\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) instead of its name.  That’s because the network protocols used for name discovery don’t traverse the NAT firewall boundary.

The device should be able to be seen by name if you configure the VM for bridged networking.

Hi,

In your Synology server, make sure that you are not limiting the SMB protocol to SMB1 max as Windows 11 won't see the share.

Hi,

by "see" I meant to have my Synology nas directly under "network" in explorer like Syno-NAS-XYZ.

Pictures attached ! @wila  SMB settings in the second picture .. min SMB is 2

I configured the network as bridged and I now have just made an Network link to my shared drive on my nas.

Thats o.k. for me ..

Thank you very much
