Hi..

The full CP version can be downloaded from optimize.vmware.com, but you need to work for a VMware partner to get access.

Also, attending a CP course is a requirement.. (I think).

That's correct. You need to be a VMware partner and someone in your company needs to have attended the course to get a login.

Platespin have a capacity planner tool called 'Recon' which in my opinion is better than Capacity Planner and available to anyone albeit there is a license cost. Capacity Planner is free once you are a partner and trained.

Another option that you could check out in the meanwhile is a VKernel virtual appliance called Modeler. You can try it out for free and see if it fulfills your capacity planning needs.

Lanamark Suite, the data center analysis and design software from Lanamark, enables solution providers deliver virtualization and IT assessments across multiple hypervisors. There is a good comparison of Lanamark Suite, Novell PlateSpin Recon and VMware Capacity Planner here:

For enterprise customers looking to jump-start virtualization projects, Lanamark offers VReady, a free virtualization readiness assessment. More information about VReady is available here:

Hope this helps.

I work for a specialist virtualisation consultancy () and we use Lanamark Suite as the capacity planning tool of choice.

As a consultancy practise we consult around Vmware, XenServer and Parallels and Lanamark allows us to be platform agnostic by allowing us to not only model a solution based on various hardware platforms but also to model solutions based on different virtualisation platforms. At the end of the capacity planning exercise, we can be absolutely sure that our solution is the very best solution for your requirements.

There are no agents to install and the information we can collect is very comprehensive. If you want to run a free virtualisation assessment you can register for one here
