Virtual center

Hi guys,

I'm new to vmware. I've tried vmware server and esx. But I'm confuse with all the management software / tools. Can someone explain what are the difference between:

Virtual center 2

Virtual center 1

Virtual Infrastuture 3

(anything else?)

Thanks a lot,

yongtin

Virtual center 2 - latest version of VirtualCenter that is a component of VI3, can manage ESX3 & ESX2 servers

Virtual center 1 - old version of VirtualCenter that was for ESX 2.X, can manage ESX2 & GSX (Server) servers

Virtual Infrastuture 3 - new product family consisting of ESX3, VC2, HA, DRS and Consolidated Backup

Virtual Infrastructure 3 is the marketing brand VMware placed on the newest release of ESX & VC.

ESX 3.0.1 is the latest version which you install on the hardware to hold the virtual machines.

VirtualCenter is the management application used to manage the virtual estate. This component isn't essential but provides additional functionality and helps to improve the management once you get above a few servers.

Virtual Centre 1/2 - Is something that we use to manage the ESX Servers. One Virtual Centre Server can manage more than one ESX Servers. It gives you nice GUI to see all VMs, Networking, Storage etc on managed ESX Boxes. So once you build a new ESX box, you add it to the Virtual Centre Server and from that point on you can manage it from the VC itself. Saves you logging at different ESX Servers (You can still connect to individual ESX Servers via its Console which is Linux based). Hope this helps

VI3 is a product family name, it is not a product on its own. So ESX Server, VI etc comes under VI3.
