Hello,
I currently have serverw with VMWare 3.01 runnning on them with 7100 series Intel processors. I want to add 2 more to my farm, however the 7300 series would be the processors.
If I do this, will this break my VMotion between the different servers.
Thanks,
I have a question much seemed with yours about Xeon 5130 family and 7120N. And I´m waiting for response too.
But, I can advance you that the family 7XXX is very seemed in terms of instructions and (Maybe I made a mistake) but, I believe that you don´t will have problems with compatibility between both.
VMware VMotion Compatibility requeriments don´t specify with all words this compatibility. You can look it in http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1991
And can see specifications of Intel Xeon 7XXX Family in http://www.intel.com/products/processor/xeon7000/specifications.htm?iid=products_xeon7000+tab_specs

Hey,
I'm just in the same situation. Did you already try the VMotion between this two processors ?
Could the different FSB be a problem ?
Intel 7100 = FSB 800MHz
Intel 7300 = FSB 1067MHz
Thanks and Greets from Germany
hi
the processor with same family same FBS, same clock speed, Same core ,supports for VMOTION ,different processor does not support for VMOTION
u can go with cold migration.............
Hello,
If the VM is a 64 bit VM, the processor must match.
If the VM is a 32 bit VM then you can play around with processor masks for each VM.
Http://www.sandpile.org has details on each processor.
