VI3 Backup Strategy

Hi all,

I'm designing a VI3 enterprise solution with 2 HP DL380's each with 16GB RAM, and a Equallogic PS100E. I'll be running approx 8-10 VM's (all windows 2003, SQL, IIS, exchange, etc), about 600Gb data, and want to know the best practices for backing up VM's and data. Ultimately I would like to spend as little as possible on a NAS and tape device, but don't want to compromise a solid design.

What backup strategies are others using out there?

We use esXpress in our environment, works great.

They are a free solution which will give you complete Full backups and an inexpensive starter edition which enables their Delta Technology. Backups run in the virtual space using VBAs (Virtual Backup Appliances).

I need help with the physical layout of the backup solution. Do you have an additional server (NAS or another SAN) that you move the Full and Incremental backups (ranger) and SAN snapshots (equallogic) to and than back them up via tape device? I understand that ESX Ranger runs on a windows host, just don't quite understand the whole picture of how ESX ranger works for offisite disaster recovery.

Thanks!
