Using a USB Modem to send and receive FAX from a VI3 VM

Hi all,

I have to create a VM (W2003) and use one or more modem (56K) to send and receive fax.

I've just tried to DIGI AnyWhere USB but it doesn't works with modems (only with one model, not buyable in Italy).

Is there someone using a modem (USB or Serial) with a VI3 VM to send and receive fax.

I can't connect the serial modem directly to the esx hosts, because it a blade server and do not have serial port (only USB).

You could use serial modems across the network with a serial-to-Ethernet server like those made by Lantronix. A device driver installed in the VM would present the remote device as a local serial port, thus not requiring any physical ports on the host.

did you try with an IP to RS232 device (I know Lantronix has one, perhpas Digi has one also)? This obviously would assume the usage of a serial interface on the modem (with hopefully less limitations than the USB interface).

I'm using the DIGI AnywhereUSB above, with MultiTech USB Modem without problems.

I've got some issue during the installation but now it's all fixed.

I prefer SerialModem with RS232/IP adapter, but when it's not possible (as this time) I must use USB devices.

Hi. I'm about to purchase a Multitech modem for use with my Digi Anywhere USB/5 on Windows XP VMs. Which exact model worked for you?

I can recommend the Silex SX2000U2 USB to Network converters. Note: If you install a Windows VM without a USB interface, there are some files and registry hives missing that need to be manually copied over / imported into the registry. I can provide further detail if needed.

I too have a Digi AnywhereUSB and a Multitech USB modem. I got the AnywhereUSB working fine, but the modem won't install. When plugged in the device is seen, and the COM port gets added, but the modem doesn't.

What did you do for the VM to see the modem ?

Hi all,

I have found a 56k analog Modem with With Drivers for 2000 32bit /XP 32bit /Vista 32/64 bit/Win7 23/64bit.

Lenovo USB Modem

The Modem works Perfect with AnywhereUSB and Win7 32 bit in a VM.
