Simple HA question

Hello,

I have a quick HA cluster question. Let's say you have a 2 host cluster. Each server has 2 QUAD CPUs. Now the HA cluster has 16 cores in total. Now you have assigned 8 VMs with 4 vCPUs each totaling 16 cores. When a host fails, where does the VMs get the additional 8 cores (that were from the failed server)? What happens to the VMs?

Thanks.

ESX can oversubscribe, but you may put yourself in a insufficient resource to failover situation.

Also, here's a great article on how HA failover is calculated.

...on a side note, how is performance with 4 vCPU's per guest? You can't reduce that?

Here is an additional HA article that is very useful: http://www.yellow-bricks.com/vmware-high-availability-deepdiv/
