Re-Sizing / Extending a LUN

We have the need to double the size of 4 LUNs connected to our 3 server 3.0.2 cluster.

We have 2 ways we can do this...

1- Create a new LUN with the proper sizing and migrate the boxes off the old LUN.

2- Extend the existing LUN

My SAN guy wants to extend the LUN but I thought I heard that this could be done but it was not recommended.

What is the best practice for re-sizing or extending a LUN???

Thanks

He wants to resize the LUN because 1) It's easier and 2) It does not require more space (which you'd need for the copy since both copies of the data would exist simutaneously).

The problem is that if he increases the size of the LUN to make VMware see it you'll need to add an extent. This is not terrible, but I does add complexity which could bite you in the future.

Or you can just move to NFS and not worry about LUNs anymore Smiley Happy
