Question about consolidated backup snapshots

I read through the documentation I found for consolidated backup, but I couldn't find an answer to this question. Does the backup process for an iSCSI storage unit require that unit to support snapshots, or is the snapshot something that ESX/VCB handles doing? Any insight would be greatly appricated.

Your storage does not have to support snapshots, it will be a function of VCB.
