NFS NAS for small test environment

Anyone know of a good NFS NAS box that will work with VMWare that doesn't cost much?

We're building a small VM test/demo lab with two servers and shared storage for VMotion.

Since this is a test and demo setup, I'd like to spend as little as possible. High reliability isn't a requirement.

My first thought for inexpensive shared storage was NFS, but I'm having trouble locating an inexpensive NAS device that supports NFS.

The NFS devices listed in the compatibility guide all seem to be more expensive than I was budgeting for.

All of the really cheap nas boxes don't seem to have NFS.

Any suggestions?

Is it possible to get a 500GB NFS capable NAS appliance for under $1k?

Hi

You'll not get far for 1000$ ... Smiley Wink so if you are looking for a supported platform i think Lefthand is the cheapest solution.

So If you have a small server with the disk space needed you can use Lefthand software.

Or. you could use a small hardware NAS that is'nt supported by Vmware . ex. Synology ds 408

just som ideas...

It doesn't look like the DS408 supports NFS. Just CIFS, AFP and FTP.

Which is what I'm running into on all the other cheap NAS appliances.

I know I could build my own NFS server with Linux or NFS for windows on an old server box, but I was hoping to find a self contained hardware

"appliance" type box like the DS408 but with NFS capability.

Unsupported is fine, as long as it works.

Why not come at this from another direction, fill your test boxes with disk and use the XVS appliance in both machine to emulate shared storage.

Any desktop PC with at least 1GHz CPU and 512 RAM + 2*500GB disks.

Linux + standard nfs server.

NFS NAS box setup will take time to install linux + 5 minutes.

Hi

All their boxes support NFS with the newest firmaware. I have a ds107+ and NFS works fine.

Look at the feature pane and you will see NFS support.
