Odd question, are VI3 licenses backwards compatible? Meaning if I purchase a 3.5 license can I install 3.0.2 instead?
It looks like the 2950/5300s are supported from http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi35_systems_guide.pdf unless I'm missing a piece somewhere....? I'm guessing that document is changing pretty frequently.
I believe so but I can't find any documentation that confirms it.

It appears so...
It would appear so... however I wonder how the new features added to the standard version of VI3.5 and the coresponding license would affect a 3.0.2 install? The issue I'm having is to be able to afford our consolidation project I had to split cost up between this past year (07) and next year (08). I bought a Dell PowerEdge 2950 Generation II server in August with a 5345 processor with the intention of buying another identical server in April of 08 to finish it out. However 3.5 is only supported on the Generation III 2950 with a 54XX class Xeon processor... :smileyangry: So much for Vmotion.
Be a bit carefull as some 3.5 licenses don't work on 3.0 variants...
For example, the 3.5 Foundation VC license is not recognised by VirtualCentre 2.0, also I'd imagine that a foundation host license would be restricted to a starter license functionality under 3.0
