Joining LUNs

Hi @ all,

I have a simply question about ESX server 3.0.1 and LUNs:

Settijng up a VM, is it possible to join 2 different LUNs in one single volume?

If it is, HOW can I do this?

I've tried to search between the threads but every query results was made bty en enormous quantity of posts...

Hope to be the first to ask....

Thx in advance for answering.

If you are talking about Windows volumes.

Just add 2 harddisk to the VM. One on LUN1 and the other on LUN2

In Windows you can make the disks dynamic and create a volume across both disks.

You will want to use extents. That is present 1 LUN to ESX and create datastore. Than add the other LUN as an extent. This will give you one large VMFS data store composed of two LUNS.

There are reasons not to do this. If either LUN fails your datastore is gone. You cannot recover any of the LUNS for other uses as you remove one extent and the Datastore is gone. This will do what you want.

First, are we talking about VMFS volumes or for instance the volumes within a VM?

In the case of VMFS volumes I would advise not to enlarge the volume by extending but just add a second VMFS volume and start building VM's on that volume.

Maybe you can tell us what "challenges" you are facing, and what the reason is behind this question.

Thanks everybody for answering Smiley Happy

No particular challenges, I'm working in an italian environment with about 40 ESX servers (with about 4/5 VMs per server); the person who manages it just asked me if it was possible to join to different LUNs in one volume (Windows 2003 I guess).

Since i've never do this I wanted to learn more....

Have a nice weekend
