You are just right. I might be that Dell will give you the Vmware support.

I know that IBM does that for some version of servers installed with a specific version of ESX.

I think following link will answer your question:

http://www.vmware.com/support/policies/ThirdParty.html

By the way, I'm running ESX 3.0.2 on a Dell SC440 at home, it's got the same Storage controller, it works without a problem, only my on-board network card isn't recognised (It's a broadcom though), but the extra NIC is found (which is also a broadcom, but a different type).

Did you test ESX 3.0.2? In IO guide is SAS 5/iR supported in both version. I plan install ESX 3.0.2 on SC440 in two weeks, so I can write here result. I use SATA drives on SC 1430.

ESX 3.0.1 install on DELL SC 440 is ok, only on-board network card isn't recognised (It's a broadcom though), but the extra NIC is found(ex intel pro1000)

SATA HD no RAID, only 32bit os is ok.

my 440 :

P4 2.0 (2180)

3g ram

500G SATA

Intel pro1000

esx 3.0.1
