Identify ESX Host Candidates using existing Hardware

Hello

Please can you advise me the best way to identify which physical servers I currently have running is going to be the best candidate to become an ESX host, so that I can consolidate other physical machines to virtual, without the need to go and buy brand new servers, for a new consolidation project.
