HA : insufficent ressource to satisfy HA failover level

What must be the result with two host about the number of current and configure failover capacity?

2 hosts for current and 1 host for configure?

I saw it in the example at http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vmware_ha_wp.pdf

I use 2 esx 3.0.1

I have 1 host for configured failover capacity.

\- When I add the first host I always have 0 host for current failover capacity.

error : insufficent ressource to satisfy HA

\- When I add the second host I have 1 host for current failover capacity.

there is no error

But when one host goes down, 0 host for current failover capacity, insufficent ressource error and HA doesn't work!

Thank you for any suggest

if you have only one ESX, HA is not meaningful for you.

HA use the default gateway IP address as heartbeat. if you unplug console cable,

explanation: By default, virtual machines are powered off on the

isolated host in case of a host isolation incident, so that they can be restarted on a different host. You can change that behavior for individual virtual machines.

Hi,

Check your name reolution, from both ESX server. Check the /etc/resolves.conf and try to add your ESX name in your /etc/hosts file....and try to ping each server.

I didn't edit the .conf file but I use the dns service. I set the hostname with the corresponding ip adress for both esx server.

I saw information in doc Ressource Management Guide page76.

When I ping from a pc to esx1 and esx2 there is nothing wrong.

Must VCenter display "current failover capacity 1 host" when add the first host and "current failover capacity 2 host" when add the second host ?

I have 0host when add esx1 or esx2 and 1host after adding both esx.

HA sould work with dns.

What should I do?

nothing wrong with you, and no special steps you should take, you HA configuration is OK. all the error or warning are normal, just reflect the HA status.

I have 1 host for configured failover capacity.

- When I add the first host I always have 0 host for

current failover capacity.

error : insufficent ressource to satisfy HA

just because you HA have only 1 host, if this host failed, no other ESX will host the failed VM, so this is a red cluster.

- When I add the second host I have 1 host for

current failover capacity.

there is no error

Yes, this is a normal Cluster, you have 1 host to backup each other

But when one host goes down, 0 host for current

failover capacity, insufficent ressource error and HA

doesn't work!

the same as when there is only 1 host in cluster, this is a yellow cluster.

if your VM can't be startup because of HA issue, you can edit your cluster property to allow VM startup when HA capacity is not satisfied.

failover capacity mean how many ESX in cluster can be faileover to remaing ESX.

I upgrade vm on ver2.x to ver3.

I think that 1host for current is good but have you seen the doc HA at http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vmware_ha_wp.pdf page 11?

There are 2 current with 2 host.

Another question

Ha use console or vmkernel port for getting the heartbeat?

If I unplug the console or vmkernel port will the vm restart on the other host?

Thanks

HA works with esx 3.0.1. I had a problem because of esx 3.0.0.

There is now 2 current hosts.
