Failover between storage boxes.

Is it possible to let the ESX host mirror the VM's disks to 2 different volumes? We are not looking for a SAN side HW replication, but a vmware software solution. Our SAN's have both FC, NFS and ISCSI but are from 2 different vendors..

It shouldnt be to much of a problem to add 1 lun from SAN1 and 1 lun from SAN2 and mirror them on the ESX host level. I think it should be able to have that done within the VM, but i dont what to add software mirroring to all our servers.

Because we have some licensing issus we are not beeing able to upgrade to Vsphere, but i hear someone talked about a similar solution there.

Does anyone know if this is possible?

No, this solution is not possible now. However I suppose VMware will implement it some day, maybe even this year. Too many requests I heard about it.

As for now you have to implement SAN/NAS side replication, vendor supported or by yourself. There are some solutions based on DRBD like Xtravirt Virtual SAN.

Also with OpenFiler, it has the ASYNC feature that you can tested and it works NFS/iSCSI/CIFS protocols.
