Essentials vs Essentials Plus

am supporting a small business request.  It appears that Essentials might be the package of choice but now it is deciding on the basic or plus.  From what I'm reading, it appears the Basic does not have vMotion, HA or Data Recovery.  True?  Not sure the Essentials Basic is much more that the ESXi hypervisor then.

You are correct, The Essentials "Basic" edition does not offer the mentioned features (see http://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere/buy/small_business_editions_comparison.html). However, it offers an easier management than managing each hosts separately. In addition to this it includes Update Manager and API write access.

The Essentials Plus Kit will give you vMotion, HA, & DRS if those are the features you are looking for.

As for Essentials, it is more than just ESXi. It gives you the ability to manage the hosts in vCenter, gives you Update Manager (which I find extremely useful), as well as a few other features:

  • VMware ESXi or VMware ESX hypervisor architecture
  • VMFS (Virtual Machine File System)
  • 4-way Virtual SMP
  • VMware vCenter Server Agent
  • VMware vStorage APIs / VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB)
  • VMware Update Manager
  • VMware vCenter Server for Essentials
