Sure there is no reason that you cannot do that, there are people that run there VC SQL server on a VM. I've been using Oracle 9i without any issues.

... but check your licenses for Oracle - they are based on cpu cores (I heard that from our Oracle guys).

You should not have any problem. We have been running Oracle databases, 8i, 9i on linux (Red Hat mostly) for years without issue. As someone said licensing may be an issue. We license by Named User so licensing has not been an issue.
