If not, is support planned and when (i.e. Linux will offcially support in 2.6.28 kernels)?

Hello,
Since the VMKERNEL is NOT a LINUX Kernel, I do not expect VMware will follow in the steps of Linux. However, if you need such functionality you will want to discuss this with your VMware Support Representative.
Unfortunately VMware does not really list the future aspects of VMware ESX or ESXi. I do not think the VMFS is changing much for the next release either.
Best regards,
