Data Recovery Appliance integration with current DR

I've had a few customers that would significantly benefit from VMware Data Recovery and the simplicity it offers for their size environment. The challenge I face is the large investment these customers already have within their enterprise backup solution. I began to think about leveraging both (since the enterprise backup products leverage tape archiving which is important.

I understand VDR integrates with CIFS shares. Has anyone chosen a CIFS destination then installed a backup agent to offload VDR data to a master server then to tape? If so, any pointers on what I should consider when designing this solution?

Thanks,

Rick

I haven't tried to save the file to a tape (IMHO I do not like to save on tape format that are not simply usable, like for example VCB images)...

But I use a remote SMB destination to save the backup to the DR site (remember that you can create different backup with different destination).

If you build a VDR in the DR than you can import those files in the new appliance.

This is a good solution for small environment, but for medium/large environment consider to use other solutions.

Hello,

No matter how you get the data to the tape backup server you will need to integrate VDR with the tape backup server so that that server knows all the data has been written to its disks so it can then dump the data to tape.

This is the issue as you need to drop a file when the process starts and either drop a file or remove that 'lock' file when the process is complete. else the tape backup server could start to drop data to tape before you are finished.
