DL360 or Dl380

Im having a tough time choosing between the two. Has anyone made a choice between these that can share there desicion? Also from the last thing I have read that quad core isnt fully taken advantage. Is this still hold correct?

As always, it depends upon your anticipated workload but I would also say than an ESX server is quite capable of making good use of 8 cores in a 2x4core configuration. An important thing would be for the server to have the correct RAM/core ratio so that one does not run out significantly before the other. As a rough guide, I would say an 8 core server should have 24gb+ of RAM for it to be reasonably balanced.

These machines are functionally the same for RAM & Proc. The only real difference is the # of slots for expansion cards. How many nics and hba ports do you need.

I like to look at the quickspecs when dealing with HP. Here are the current systems:

Quad cores are used effectively, you just need enough load to get their attention. We have a similar config in BL460c blades with 32 GB of RAM and we have a hard time getting enough cycles on the processors. RAM does go first in most cases.

There were 2 reasons we went with the 380's over the 360s'. The first has already been mentioned, expansion card options. The 2nd issue was the DL360s have the WORST cable management system ever, and by the time you get LAN, Fiber, Dual Power, KVM, you've got a real mess on your hands due to how thin they are. Price wise they're about the same too, so the larger form factor was a big plus.

I like the DL380 form factor, the quantity of local disk is amazing as is the ability to put in more than 1 PCI card if you have full power supply redundancy. I often need more than 6 NIC ports (2 on board + 4 on PCI card) to make my configurations. It boils down to how much local disk, NIC, FC-HBA or iSCSI HBA you need given that memory and CPU is relatively the same. The 380 gives you more options than the 360.

My personal preference is the DL380 as the form factor gives more room of expandability, with the DL360 only you have two expension slots, that means a maximum of 6 NIC's if you are utilising FC SANS, 10 if using iSCSI or NAS. also when you speck then up with this amount of NIC's the rear end is a nightmare to administrate, as the earlier post stated the cable mamagement on a DL360 is poor and it is very tight to manouver in there.

The DL380 with its 2U form factor has 4 expansion slots, remember that only three of these are full hight. also it can not take upto 8 internal disks rather than the 6 that the DL360 can utilise.

other than than the rest of the spec is similar, both can take 2 quad core XEONs and upto 32GB in memory.
