Convert XenServer 5.5 CentOS/RHEL 5 with xen-tools installed to VMWare ESX.

This is a step-by-step howto to help you migrate a CentOS/RHEL 5 VM with xen-tools installed in XenServer 5.5 to VMWare ESX.

I have done this last year when I migrated from XS 5.5 to ESX 4. It should also work on ESXi 5 and CentOS/RHEL 6. The concept is still the same but the version of kernels, vmware converter and hypervisors will be different so please post here to share the knowledge if you do a migration from later versions.

Hi Adam,

I'm trying to do exactly this, migrate a bunch of Centos Linux VM's off a XS 6.5 host to a ESXI 6.5 host. There are many theoretical discussions how this may be done but this is the only practical howto I've found so far.
I have a question though: When you talk about the source machine, do you mean the source hardware node / dom0 or the actual source VM ?

Oh, and where do you find the VMware converter tarball you mention in the PDF. I can only find a windows exe for download.
